The advice that comes with most software which actively answers modems is
NOT to use the /dev/cuX ports, but to only use the /dev/ttySX ports on Linux.
This is for exactly this reason.  I seem to remember that Hylafax carries
this warning, although I've successfully used it with session locking
disabled, on /dev/cuX.
