The USR Sportster I have works that way, but not as class 2.0. USR seems to have solid modulation code and pathetic fax firmware. I personally would not depend on the operation of a Class 1 modem under FreeBSD unless the system is dedicated to fax operation. This is not a slam against FreeBSD, I'd say the same thing about any system that does not have explicit support for "realtime"-oriented applications. There is also the issue that you are assuming that my Class 1 driver is better than any Class 2/2.0 firmware that you can buy. Given that there are high quality Class 2/2.0 modems at inexpensive prices I can see no reason to spend much effort on a Class 1 modem unless you: 1. Already have a Class 1 modem that you want to use. 2. Need some functionality that is not available with a Class 2/2.0 modem. I used a Class 1 modem with my software in production use for several years with excellent results. I have since replaced it with a Class 2.0 modem with as good if not better reliability. Sam
