The license is irrelevant with regards to USB support in ESXi 4.1. If you're running version 4.1 then USB support is available.

Is this the unlicensed (free) version of ESXI or licensed version under maintenance and support?  I have a customer with ESXI 4.1 free version and USB pass through was not available.

This information is not correct! USB passthrough to a virtual machine DOES work on both ESX and ESXi as of version 4.1!

 

I run VMware vSphere ESXi 4.1 and use a USB modem.
