Is this the unlicensed (free) version of ESXI or licensed version under maintenance and support?  I have a customer with ESXI 4.1 free version and USB pass through was not available.

This information is not correct! USB passthrough to a virtual machine DOES work on both ESX and ESXi as of version 4.1!

 

I run VMware vSphere ESXi 4.1 and use a USB modem.
