It's not impossible to "manufacture" one yourself.  One way I can 
quickly imagine would be with an FXS port, Asterisk, IAXmodem, and 
HylaFAX running on the "appliance".  Plug your fax machine into the FXS 
port, and then "relay" the fax from the "appliance" HylaFAX system to 
the server HylaFAX system.  It's not perfectly smooth, but it will 
work.  I've done it before with a fax machine that was on an oil rig out 
in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico that had no analog phone lines and 
only a shaky satellite link connection for internet/communications.
