I have two Lucid machines running Hylafax; one asks for a password on

Thanks,

Thanks for writing back.

I copied that file from good machine to bad machine and restarted HF. No
joy. The file contains:

localhost:21::

(there is no user ID on either system == 21)

What now?

you might try this:
[drf@maplepark ~]$ sudo cat /var/spool/hylafax/etc/hosts.hfaxd
localhost
127.0.0.1
[drf@maplepark ~]$

as the documentation indicates all but the first field are optional and my installation works well with the above (no passwords).
