It is most-likely that the Motorola SM56 modem you are using is at 
fault.  You'd probably be best-served by getting a different modem, one 
without that chipset (one with a known-good fax chipset - search the 
archives for suggestions).

That said, I don't use 4.4.4, and so you may find that HylaFAX+ 5.2.9 
(http://hylafax.sourceforge.net) has a different recovery procedure that 
enables a workaround for this situation.
