[hylafax-users] USR USB Modem "wedged"?

Hi - I am running HylaFAX 4.4.3 (from the Ubuntu repositories) under
Ubuntu 8.04 with an USR 56K USB Modem (5637).

With Minicom, I can access the modem on /dev/ttyACM0 just fine.
HylaFAX, however, tells me "Waiting for modem to come ready"
(faxstat), or that the modem would be wedged (daemon.log):

Dec 14 07:39:47 server FaxQueuer[4849]: HylaFAX (tm) Version 4.4.3

Dec 14 07:39:47 server FaxQueuer[4849]: Copyright (c) 1991-1996 Silicon Graphics, Inc.
Dec 14 07:39:47 server HylaFAX[4851]: HylaFAX INET Protocol Server: restarted.
Dec 14 07:39:47 server FaxGetty[4856]: OPEN /dev/ttyACM0 HylaFAX (tm) Version 4.4.3
Dec 14 07:40:04 server FaxGetty[4856]: /dev/ttyACM0: Can not initialize modem.
Dec 14 07:41:38 server FaxGetty[4856]: Unable to setup modem on /dev/ttyACM0; giving up after 2 attempts
Dec 14 07:41:38 server FaxGetty[4856]: CLOSE /dev/ttyACM0
Dec 14 07:41:38 server FaxQueuer[4849]: MODEM /dev/ttyACM0 appears to be wedged
Dec 14 07:41:38 server FaxQueuer[4849]: MODEM WEDGED: bin/wedged "ttyACM0" "/dev/ttyACM0"
Dec 14 07:41:39 server FaxQueuer[4849]: NOTIFY exit status: 0 (4874)

config.ttyACM0 exists in /etc/hylafax and in /var/spool/hylafax/etc,
created from usr-xon via the faxaddmodem script.

I don't see any communication to the modem in the log, so don't have a
clue what the issue might be. I'd appreciate any hint on what I could
try to at least identify a possible source of the issue.

Thanks for any hint, Christian
