Either something is failing on the modem hardware, something is buggy in 
the Linux kernel serial driver that you're using, or the line audio 
quality has suddenly deteriorated.

Since this corresponds with a kernel upgrade I would suggest that it is 
most likely involved with the Linux kernel serial driver or settings.

Try going back to CentOS 5.1 to see if the problem still occurs.
