exim4 might be a better  (i.e., options closer to the original)  sendmail 
replacement than postfix.

However, the *real* problem here is *not* that sendmail is old-fashioned, but 
that your installation of sendmail is misconfigured.  You are essentially 
putting in a floor drain as opposed to fixing a leaky roof.  You just need to 
fix your sendmail configuration  (read the howtos and your distribution's own 
documentation, just in case they changed anything)  and it will work.
