I am attempting to integrate automatic faxing of various documents from an
java based open source CRM package Ofbiz (http://ofbiz.apache.org/).

This software generates various documents (invoices, quotes, etc) in PDF
format. I note in the hylafax documentation that PDF is one of the
supported formats of latest sendfax. However, in the couple of client
packages I looked at, I only find postscript.

Does this sound dooable and if so, can someone point me to documentation on
the API so I can duplicate this sendfax functionality in java.
Specifically, will I need to translate PDF to postscript.

Please have a look at the gnu.hylafax java client, which you can find at:

If the API approach is not ideal for you, then just execute HylaFAX's own 'sendfax' client at the commandline via a hook from your application.

HylaFAX will handle the PDFs natively, there's no need to convert them yourself client-side.
