Thank you very much, Aidan. I added the above four lines to my config.ttyd0 
file and killed the running faxgetty (init restarted it right away).

It did not work, but after I added spaces around the =-signs: "NMBR = ", it 
finally worked...

This was, probably, the most difficult configuration job I had to do in many 
years, matching configuring an X-server in complexity and the number of 
gotchas...

If the prefixes you list are the most common, should not something 
like "{NMBR|NAME|ANID|NDID}\s*=\s*" be the /default/ settings?..
