Ubuntu is based on Debian, I believe.  With Debian there were some 
Ghostscript configuration/installation issues that are troublesome.  I 
made some changes in HylaFAX+ to help ease these the pain of these 
problems.  And then, with Debian Etch 4.0r0 I run configure like this:

./configure --with-PATH_AFM="/usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts" 
--with-FONTMAP="/usr/share/gs-gpl/8.54/lib"

And then all is well.  Obviously you may need to adjust this (especially 
the 8.54 part) to suit your needs.
