I think that Hans was referring to the reception speed, and in that case there is no guarantee that the sender will try different bit rates or different modulations. One very common behavior for some kinds of senders is to, when training down, is to skip right over all of the V.29 modulations because it overlaps bitrates with V.17 (and thus the sender prefers V.17). In those cases, then, if it is a V.17 incompatibility, the negotiated bitrate will eventually be 4800 bps (V.27ter) instead of 9600 bps (V.29), and in cases where V.17 is known to be incompatible it is wise to disable it so that the sender does not attempt to use it.


But when HylaFAX is the sender... yes, you are correct for most cases... usually HylaFAX will take care of the down-training automatically.
