Thank you for reply.
I've already recompiled the kernel enabling all the
serial port needed by Octo+ fax board.
All have been working fine for a while, but now 
one of the modems seems to be stucked.

You may be running into a limitation in RHEL4 where only a small number 
of legacy serial ports are enabled. See:
