The server only handles PDF, TIFF, and Postscript (and possibly also PCL). If you want to send any other kind of file then the client program must convert it first. Most clients offer some means of conversion (often via a "print-to-fax" functionality). HylaFAX's sendfax client uses a "typerules" file to tell it how to convert other formats into PDF, TIFF, or Postscript.
