Hi Davide, I suspect that this will never work reliably.... Firstly, running HylaFAX on a virtual server removes the tight timing and control needed between the protocol engine and the fax hardware, and secondly, the Ethernet to serial converter does the same thing but with even less control of the timing. With respect to your question about modem control signals then this will be an issue for the serial driver.... most apps can live without RI but DCD is often an issue if it's missing. Ever thought of a multiport fax card ? It just plugs in and works..... One of our customer is trying to setup a linux server virtualized on VMWARE to send faxes. The main problem is VMWARE ESX limit the support to only serial ports and that he has only 1 physical serial port on the physical machine. To solve the issue and have more than 1 fax connected to the virtual server he has ordered a ethernet to serial converter: ET-BOX-232 http://www.qfp.it/et-box.php After the installation of the kernel module and the configuration of the virtual layer to see the virtual serial device, I was able to launch faxsetup on the virtual device and it has correctly recognized the USB Robotics modem that was connected the the converter. But the story is not a success... we are unable to send faxes, the device seems to hang. I've asked for support to qfp and they are willing to help me, but they asked me something that I really don't know on hylafax use of the serial port: ITALIAN LANGUAGE: > tenga presente che il modulo gestisce i segnali tx, rx, rts, cts ma > non gli altri segnali di controllo > come ad esempio il CD, RI. Che lei sappia l'applicazione ha bisogno di > questi segnali ? ENGLISH TRANSLATION: you have to know that the kernel module handle tx, rx, rts and cts signals, but it does not handle other control signals, i.e. CD, RI. As far as you know, the application does need those signals? So, the question is, does hylafax need CD, RI or other serial control signals to properly function?
