HylaFAX is always compiled from source. First the config.site file
is modified slightly to change some installation directories and
compiler flags. Then there is the usual command sequence:

./configure --disable-pam
make
make install

After this, faxsetup is run and this completes the installation.
Each install is basically brand new in that nothing is saved from
previous versions, but I will always copy my somewhat customized
config and config.ttyS1 over the ones produced by faxsetup. Also,
sendfax.conf from previous versions is copied.

HylaFAX is started only when needed using these commands:

/usr/bin/faxq
/usr/lib/fax/hfaxd -i 4559
/usr/lib/fax/faxgetty ttyS1 &

The command used for transmitting a fax is as follows:

sendfax -m -n -R -d'xxxxxxxxxx' fax-page1.tif fax-page2.tif ...

These tif files are prepared using ghostscript and are 2-D
at 204x196. 2-D seems to be the most common and if a machine
needs 1-D it will be converted "on-the-fly."

Because I use a stand-alone desktop system, I have modified the
notify script to print a message directly on a terminal screen.

This procedure has always worked quite well for me and has given
me no problems. But I usually send a few test faxes and check the
logs after each new install and after upgrading to 4.3.1 I noticed
the lack of 2-D conversion for the first time and also the long-standing
absence of ECM.
