Re: [hylafax-users] Hylafax server & windows client

That's a rather "round-robin" way of faxing but I guess you could do it. I'm not sure why you wouldn't just put the modem in the HylaFAX machine and be done with it.

The best client out there IMHO is the HylaFSP that ifax.com sells for around $35 per seat. It's not free, true but it uses the Windows fax interface and will let you use the fancy cover sheets as well as send to multiple receipients. If you really need to send faxes to mutliple locations frequently this is a good method. Although you could get the document in a PS or PDF format on your HylaFAX server and then do some creative things that way as well.

Then again, if you don't mind sending to only one number at a time, the WinprintHylfax client is free and it works great like this:

1. Install the fax modules from the Windows components on your M$ machine. Then just do like my girlfriend does and "fake it" to point to any modem or any other printer object. You won't actually be faxing or printing with this printer/device.

2. Install WinPrintHylafax and set it to print to your HylaFax server.

3. Prepare your document in any Windows application like Word, Excel, Notepad, whatever.

4. Print the document to the fax/printer device you setup. This will give you a chance to use the fancy M$ cover sheets, etc....it will also save a copy of each fax you send on your M$ machine...if that's important to you.

5. When the print dialogue boxes come up you will be given a choice to "preview" the fax. While you're in the preview mode, print this preview document to the WinHylaFAX printer and viola...you've got a professional looking fax document with a nifty cover sheet...and the whole setup is FREE!

I was wondering if anyone has tried running the hylafax server on a
vmware linux appliance such as fedora core 5 and then trying to send a
fax using a windows client.

Technically if I have a modem on my windows box, and I was running a
vmware application running fedora 5, I could run the hylafax server and
be able to send faxes using a windows client such as WHFC or winprint
hylafax to the hylafax service running inside the vmware appliance.

This is an interesting idea if it hasn't already been implemented?
