Yeah it's a bit cumbersome. Yeah reading PostScript is not particularly intuitive. Yeah there are problematic variants of PostScript. However, right now - other than writing our own cross-platform GUI coverpage creation program - it seems to be the best approach.

Could the Open Document Format be used in some way? Use Openoffice to
create templates... leave tags where you want them... parse the odt
file, substitute your data for the tags... convert odt to ps (don't
know how that will be done).

Show us how this (both parsing and format conversion) would be done, and I can figure out how to get it into faxcover. Then together we can evaluate how well that works as a solution. On the surface, however, I don't see how we'd be able to convert from odt to ps/pdf without introducing a dependency on some OpenOffice compatibility library or something.

I was just thinking out loud. As I stated above "don't know how that will be done" :) However there is a proposal for odf2pdf at opendocumentfellowship.org. They apparently already have odt2html but I haven't tried it.
