Curiosity: I was tempted to suggest to leave out faxgetty as 'obvious'. Not ?

For faxq to schedule outbound jobs to a modem it must be informed that the modem is ready and available for work. The most ideal way for this to happen is to be run a daemon that continually monitors the modem and continually keeps faxq informed of its status. Such a daemon is faxgetty. However, there are circumstances where one cannot have such a daemon running (like there is a different daemon that needs to be run)... and in these cases one can use faxmodem to inform the faxq process of the modem's presense. The downside, however, is that faxq really does not know from then on (with the exception of watching for lockfiles) until it attempts a call with faxsend what is going on with the modem. Thus 'faxstat' output is meaningless for modem status when modems are not in a send process. Furthermore, if faxq is restarted faxmodem must also be re-run ... and most peoples' 'hylafax restart' scripts will not do this.

So for "us" that need to support users it's better for us to recommend faxgetty usage - because it's easier for the user to do and less-headache for us in the long-run.

Wow. That was much more than I had ever expected.

Thanks for details on the process !

Uwe
