Re: [hylafax-users] Problem installing Mainpine OCTO+
Thanks for the update John,
I understand the CentOS procedure is in final QA. I will ask whether we can
send you a pre-release for testing.
The RockForce products are NOT sensitive to line polarity. Indeed, a number
of the compliance tests (the old TBR21 for instance) mandate testing with
both line polarities. I therefore suspect that something else is going
on.... However, if it's working then we probably don't need to do much more
than log the results for future customers who are having problems.

Subject: RE: [hylafax-users] Problem installing Mainpine OCTO+
First, any word on the kernel compile procedure for CentOS so all the ports
on the OCTO+ can be used?
It's been a long week getting the OCTO+ up and running. Durning the process
I've found an issue that I assume will effect not only the OCTO+ but the 2
and
4 line boards as well. WATCH OUT for reverse line polarity and/or PAIRGAIN
units.
Although most phones and modems don't care about line polarity it looks like
the OCTO+ has a hard time detecting the ring if it's reversed. I had
unpluged the OCTO+ from the phone line while putting in new cables. When I
reconnected the board it would not detect ring on one line. I check the line
with a butt set and found the line working but the polarity was reversed.
Went back to the punch down blocks and found the wiring was correct but the
line from the telco had tip and ring swapped. I think they may have done
this when they repaired a shorted line a couple of weeks ago.
In addition when they fix the line they moved it over to a PairGain unit.
Watch out for lines connected to some PairGain units as they seem to have a
problem passing Caller ID. I'm not fighting with the AT&T (SBC) about
returnng my line back to the CO. They don't want to and say the loss of
Caller ID is just the way it is.
So at this point I'm not sure if the reverse line issue only shows up when
going through a PairGain or if a swapped tip and ring from the CO would have
done the same thing. The main point is that if your having problems
detecting rings check the line polarity.
