I think this last report means that it tried to dial the modem 12
times, which doesn't make sense since the modem activity lights
indicated no activity, dialing or otherwise.
It has made 0 out of 12 dials.
You probably need to run faxgetty.

I read the man page for faxgetty. You are most likely correct. In
reading the man page, is says that faxgetty "is typically started by
init(8C)". Not being a total expert (I know enough to know that I don't
know), I know that init files are usually something I shy away from -
too easy to make the computer unbootable - been there, done that :-( ...
Tried running faxgetty from the command line - didn't expect it to work,
but sometimes things do anyway. I was correct, booted KDE System Guard
and faxgetty is not listed.
Could you expand a little and explain how to get faxgetty running when
the computed is booted.
