yes, I have a modem configured for outgoing calls.

Faxstat says this:

$ faxstat -s
HylaFAX scheduler on w1.oeko.net: Running

JID  Pri S  Owner Number       Pages Dials     TTS Status
7    127 W   toni 0123456789    0:0   0:12         


But I've stolen the modem from this computer as I try this right now, I
hadn't when I originally reported the problem.
