[hylafax-users] Swann modem: No response to PPS repeated 3 times

I have just purchased a Swann Smart Pro Surfer fax modem.  When I run
faxsetup I get a "not recognised" message and I am supposed to enter
various AT commands manually.  I have accepted the defaults.  The manuals
with the modem are rather skimpy.  If its of any help, I get the following
in my log:

When I try to send a document with the sendfax comment I get the following
- I suspect I've got a hardware incompatability problem.  Can anybody
suggest any solutions, before I try to return my modem.  It may be
possible to swap my modem with a Netcomm (don't know the exact model). 
How do these fare with HylaFax?

BTW, I am running Debian sarge.  I tried hand-compiling from source with
the latest edition (quite an effort to get working!) with no further joy.
