Are you sure that your TIFF viewer supports multi-page TIFF?

What version of HylaFAX are you using?  The uuencode_it was only 
applicable for older versions of HylaFAX.  With all recent releases you 
would have simply done:

 FILETYPE=pdf
 SENDTO=fax@localhost

And the MIMENCODE value (and UUENCODE and ENCODING) should be in 
etc/setup.cache as properly put there by faxsetup.
