I would suggest that you review the mail archives before trash picking.....
USR modems in particular will give you LOTS of problems.

Don't forget that fax is also 33600bps (Super G3) and this accounts for
something like 35% of US fax traffic.

Since hylfax works best with a version 1 or 1.0 fax modem, you can use
almost any external "fax" modem you can get your hands on. 

Over the years I've trash picked modems from U.S. Robotics, Dynamode, Hayes,
etc. The hardest problem I've had with them is figuring out the voltage and
polarity (if not AC) of the adaptors because they often are thrown out
seperately.

The modems ranged in data speeds from 9600 to 56k, but fax is either 9600 or
14.4k.
