In my situation I have control of the client program, and so I know that 
information based on the user's login.

However, you could follow Aidan's suggestion and use a faxsend wrapper, 
altering the dialstring there.

I will agree, though, that a "clean" solution does not yet exist.  Some 
ideas about this were expressed here:
