Okay, after rebooting, reran: su -c faxsetup which ran faxaddmodem and then completed. Opened etc/config and etc/config.ttyS0 and added lines for UUCPLockDir and UUCPLockType parameters. Then ran 'faxadduser terry' Then rebooted for changes in installation to take effect. then ran faxstat. Got running and idle response. Logged onto ISP for 30 minutes and logged off. Checked faxstat, "waiting for modem to come free". Checked again about 15 minutes later: running and idle. Booted ksendfax and was able to send a fax okay. Was then able to log back onto ISP. I haven't timed it, but it seems to take faxgetty several minutes to check the modem and find it free. So overall, HylaFAX seems to be running and coexisting with kppp quite well at this point and working quite well with ksendfax.
