The only possibly relevant thing I see in that message that I should avoid
is the specific use of /dev in the faxgetty argument. ttyS0 remains is a
device not a soft link (that would be /dev/modem as that points to
/dev/ttyS0).

Since re-running faxaddmodem and again taking default answers for
everything other than device, phone and modem class the modem now answers
and accepts the test fax transmissions. So that *is* progress. ;-) Doesn't
explain why when I originally ran faxaddmodem giving it the same required
information the modem didn't respond and now since running the script
again (providing exactly the same info) it does.
Okay with this progress on to the next problem.
The tiff file dropped into the recvq subdirectory even appears to be the
test fax I sent. However, the MIME encoded copy emailed by the receive
agent to faxmaster is unusable. Saving the text out of pine results not in
a PDF/PostScript file but a uuencoded file lacking a begin line, which is
easily explained as the encapsulated uuencoded PDF file doesn't have one.
