Re: [hylafax-users] Apparent page size mismatch on incoming fax

Hylafax reports on an incoming fax:

The size of ISO A4 is 210×297 mm, while 215.2mm is closer to the width of
"Letter".

Page widths in fax are fixed. Most faxes are going to be 1728 pixels wide in 215 mm for normal, fine, and superfine resolutions (which means 8 pixels per mm or 204 dpi), and that's fixed by the fax protocol. T.30 (Table 2 Note 10) refers to this as "ISO A4, North American Letter and Legal". So to be consistent with the other two page *width* sizes (ISO B4 and ISO A3 - both of which are rarely used) we just call it "ISO A4".

That said, the information to which you're referring "Page: ISO A4" in your received fax notification is actually determined (against "Letter" or "Legal") from the page *length* and not the width. As A4, Letter, and Legal all use the same width setting they are distinguished by the length. So in other words, when it says "ISO A4" it means that the page length was closer to 297mm than it was to 279mm (Letter's length), and it was.
