[hylafax-users] Question: Sending specific outgoing faxes as email attachments instead

We operate a hylafax 4.1.5 server, running on SuSE, which has been delivering outgoing faxes flawlessly for more than a year.  I've set up an email to fax gateway and cobbled together several scripts to customise it..

What I would like to do, but I'm not sure how to go about is to implement delivering outgoing faxes to specific telephone numbers by email instead.

We have an increasing number of external sites that staff fax to, but which have email addresses.  I would like to maintain a list of fax numbers with the corresponding email addresses, and write a script to look up the number for faxes and email those that match as attachments instead.

I've seen similar projects, but these deal with emailing /incoming/ faxes.  I can't see any hooks to hang a script on to check outgoing faxes when they are received by the server, before being queued.

Another way might be to set up some sort of imaginary pseudo modem, which the special faxes are directed to.

If anybody has any suggestions on how to get started on this project, or references to prior art, I would appreciate it hugely.

Thanks for reading.
