Maybe it's this problem:

In case version 1:01.02.03-9 does not work, you can use a wrapper  
script. (version 1:01.02.03-8 and -9 segfault on my system)
Here is the version I currently use:

#! /bin/sh
/usr/bin/c2faxsend "$@"
rc=$?
if [ $rc -gt 5 ]
then
  logger -p daemon.err -t c2faxsend.wrap \
     "changing unknown exit code $rc to 0 (retry)"
  rc=0
fi
eval qfile=\$$#
sed 's/^returned:0$/returned:'${rc}'/' $qfile > ${qfile}.new
mv ${qfile}.new $qfile
exit $rc
