Re: [hylafax-users] Fax modem (data rate vs fax rate)

Thanks for responding, David. :)

That depends. If they're being sent in "fine" (or "high resolution") mode,
to or from a slow fax machine, it's not too unusual. There are still quite
a few 9600 bps fax machines out there.

Can I control the resolution at which the faxes are sent? What resolution do people normally use? As long as the faxes are legible, I am willing to experiment. You are right when you said that there are still 9600bps modems out there.

It might. I recently started using a fax modem that supports V.34 faxing,
which is up to 33.6 kbps. In real life I've mostly seen 26.4 to 28.8 kbps,
but I've still seen two page, standard-mode faxes transfer in only ten
seconds. Of course, both ends have to support V.34 to see any benefit. My
limited experience suggests that most people are still using 14.4 kbps fax
machines.

I am planning to switch from MT1932ZDX (14.4k and V.32 data compression) to MT5634ZBA-V92 (33.6k and v.44 data compression). Would data compression matter for fax transmissions?

Thanks again. Joe.
