The old one was kind of cobbled together -- I'd tried to get this working
under 4.1.1 before you told me to upgrade, you'll recall, and now I'm
running 4.2.1. I re-ran faxaddmodem and let it generate a new file. So far
it seems to be working *much* better -- we haven't had a single failed fax
since I reconfigured. (Faster, too -- last time I'd mistakenly configured
the modem as Class 1 instead of Class 1.0.)

Sorry to have pestered you with what was basically my own configuration
issue. I'm generally a pretty sharp guy, but this fax stuff has had a steep
learning curve for me.
