It's only important if you intend to use these modems to *send* faxes. And if you do, then it's quite important.

with other modems or fax equipment?

If our testing is correct, then you won't be able to *send* faxes with V.17. So, you could disable V.17 altogether in your Class 1 sending config if you wanted, but then you would limit your non-V.34 fax sessions to 9600 baud.
