As you may see, using 4.2.1-2 you cannot have that error, so maybe your
system wasn't correctly configured.

giuseppe@casa:~$ dpkg -S libfaxutil
hylafax-client: /usr/lib/libfaxutil.so
hylafax-client: /usr/lib/libfaxutil.so.4.2.1
giuseppe@casa:~$ dpkg -l hylafax-client | grep ^i
ii  hylafax-client 4.2.1-2        Flexible client/server fax software
