Was this log taken with FAA=1 ?

There is only one sure-fire way to determine if your modem's AA works.
Turn off faxgetty by commenting out a line that looks like:
S4:35:respawn:/usr/sbin/faxgetty ttyS4
from /etc/inittab and then run "init q"
Then start minicom from the command line, and enter the following command:

AT+FAA=1

and then

AT+FAA?

to verify that it's set to "1".

Get out of minicom and reverse the first two steps to start faxgetty again.
Arrange to have a fax sent to you, and answer manually with the command "ATA".
Then arrange to have a data call to you, and answer manually with "ATA".

If the modem returns a string containing "FAX" in the first case, and "DATA"
in the second, then the adaptive answer is functioning correctly. If it
doesn't, it might be possible to work around it depending on what the modem
returns in each case.
