There was a bug in the 4.2.0 release which affected Topic chipsetted 
modems.  See the last item on:

  http://bugs.hylafax.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=543

So you can wait for the next release of CVS-HEAD or download it 
yourself, or patch your source and rebuild/reinstall.
