[hylafax-users] I'm fed up with faxing under linux :-)

Hi,

Since I've didn't get answer on my previous post
I try ask again.
Now I'm using two modems, first: highly recommended
ZyXEL U-1496E+ and second ASMAX external fax/modem
based on ROCKWELL V1456VQE chipset.
My system is:
HylaFAX 4.1.8 compiled from sources
GNU Ghostscript 7.07 compiled from sources
running Debian 3.0r2, with kernel 2.4.24
I love HylaFAX for it design which gives
great flexibility in setting up faxing environment
(I'm using MySQL to store sent and received faxes in pdf
format. To achieve this I've written some perl scripts on
server side and used redmon + client program written in
wxWindows)
There is nothing I can complain about "software part" of
HylaFAX, but when it comes to hardware i.e. modems it's
a real pain.
I live in Poland getting modems recomended on hylafax site
is very hard more over most of them are old or very old models
which aren't made anymore.
I've managed to buy ZyXEL U-1496E+ and must say that it is big
disappointment to me it fails much more frequent to send/receive
faxes than it should. I brought V1456VQE from home
and it works great. On mailing list when something doesn't
work first answer is use Class1 second try different modem this
is not acceptable solutions to say at least.
I've seen so many Windows faxservers working without
any problems with almost any faxmodem/isdn modem you name it
So now I'm not so convinced that most of the cases is flaky
hardware/modem.
It seems that the biggest issue is choosing the RIGHT modem.
(so what that I can configure my system in any way I want when
i can't send fax with it)
I think that HylaFAX users(talking about us :-))
should start keep modem list as current as possible
My very,very small contribution :-))
1) I've tested U.S.Robotics 56KFax-Modem (model 5630) it worked
but I didn't tested it much, it had no problem to connect to
Canon Laser 9000 series which is my quality test :-).
CallerID doesn't work (on windows also so I've stopped trying)

2)ASMAX FAX/MODEM on ROCKWELL V1456VQE chipset must say that
in Class1 there is no problems sending/reciving. Class2.0
doesn't work. I think that on the market there are dozens of
modems from different manufacturers which are using this chipset
so it is worth trying them also.CallerID doesn't work because
it is not supported by this model :-)

3)ZyXEL U-1496E+ firmware 6.21, Well ... I wouldn't recommend
this modem I've tried it in Class1 Class2 Class2.0
with different options, all failed I think there must be some
hardware problem. To often I've got no carrier, so it must be
to sensitive for some fax machines.Don't get me wrong it
manages to send and receive faxes but there are many failed
attempts.Caller ID doesn't work I don't know why.

Could somebody tell me why I get so often No Carrier with this
modem.
My logs regarding ZyXEL and this problem.

I'm not searching for solution I doubt there is,
now I'm only curious why apparently randomly I get no carrier
at this point. Remote hangup on me bad signal etc. ?
I don't think that there is problem with my config but maybe
I'm wrong ?

I'm using config files from HylaFAX source and tried this
options:

RTNHandlingMethod: Giveup
ModemSetupAACmd: AT+FAA=0
ModemRate: 38400
ModemResetCmds: AT&B1&N0&S0*F0S18=2S38.3=1S39=0
(lowering rate to 19200 has no impact on sending/receiving so
I've left it that way)
(Phase B/C timeout propably helped with some Panasonic
faxmachines)
Class2PHCTOCmd: AT+FPHCTO=FF

Class2DCCQueryCmd: "!(0,1),(0-5),(0-4),(0),(0,1),(0),(0),
(0-7)"
I know that there should be some help on this but I didn't
find it .Anybody knows ?

Chris

PS. Still waiting for MultiTech modems.
