I had the very same problem with Debian/sid, and suspected somehow
Debian package itself is the problem. Quickly installed a minimal
Slackware in ~20mins and got it working.

I believe updated packages in stable and sid don't have the problem,
though I didn't check the Debian bug database for this (please let us
know if you do).
