I get that problem sometimes too. I used a DID modem from MultiTech and
sometimes faxgetty fails to open ttyS0 as well. Actually it is not
limited to comm ports. I have a realport from Digi which sometimes get
the same problem.

I am curious to learn what is causing that as well.
