You shouldn't have any problems with hardware flow control over software flow control. Historically there have been modems (USRs are some) which have not handled hardware flow control appropriately. So I think that applications have tended towards software flow control due to this (trying to support the vast number of USR Sportsters out there). However, there are some modems out there that don't work right with software flow control and require hardware flow control (I think the Conexant soft modems are an example of this).
