The modem (in this case the driver) is locked up, and that's why you 
get wedged errors.  I suspect that reloading the linmodem module will 
correct the situation temporarily.  However, you should seek out the 
latest linmodem driver for your Conexant modem.  If that doesn't fix 
things, then you may want to change modems.

I use Lucent and PCTel linmodems with good success, and without 
problems like this, BUT one thing to remember is that it probably will 
need to be the *ONLY* linmodem on the system and definitely the only 
serial or pseudo-serial device.  The linmodem drivers seem to mess with 
the kernel serial driver.
