it is, i compiled them both from source on the same machine.

this returns:
# strings /usr/local/lib/libfaxutil.so | grep ghost
/usr/local/share/ghostscript/8.00/lib:/usr/local/share/ghostscript/fonts
which indeed holds the font metrics and fontmap files

whether i have the hyla.conf file or not, doesn't seem to matter.

i will try it out on another system and perhaps use the rpm's.

fonts are intalled where gs -h says, but i don't know enough about
strace to reliably debug texfmt.

hmmm, this is a bit too far fetched for me. i want a reliable fax
system without having to do a lot of hacking myself. i will see what
happens on another machine. maybe it'll work there, otherwise i'll have
to try another application :(
thanks for the help
