The HylaFAX man pages says it should do the opposite, that is a device named
/dev/ttyG/x/XX 
would get renamed to ttyG_x_XX for HylaFAX internal use.
So if this is what you see, then it's normal; if you actually see what you
wrote (the opposite of the man page) that show where the problem happens
(ie: you do faxaddmodem ttyG_x_XX  and it creates a FIFO with "/", ..).
