This is an echo.  faxaddmodem initializes the modem with a CR and then 
ATQ0V1E1 before sending the specified sendToModem() command.  In this case 
it's AT+FCLASS=?.

So, in you cu session try:

<CR>
ATQ0V1E1<CR>
AT+FCLASS=?<CR>

and see what you get.
