[hylafax-users] modem wedged?

i've been trying to set up hylafax, and i keep getting this in my syslog:

FaxQueuer[29876]: MODEM /dev/ttyS0 appears to be wedged

i read something else about it before, but didn't really get a clear answer 
from it. what exactly does "wedged" mean, and how do i unwedge it?
