I can't be sure, but I think that this is a problem that was caused when
the "beta" and "rc" series ended and broke some shell scripting in
configure.  This has been fixed in CVS.  Or... you could edit configure at
line 443 to read:

if [ "$DIST_TYPE" = beta ]; then

(note the quotes)

At the time it meant that there were reports that rc2 ran into 'make
install' errors because of a poorly written makefile.  A fix was created,
but it has not been applied to CVS, because it was not followed-up by the
reporter.
