This happens, for example, in instances when the communication is so poor that the remote decides to terminate the call rather than retraining or resending data. So, for example, after receiving a page HylaFAX sends RTN because of rejected page quality, the remote decides not to bother resending it, and HylaFAX gets an unexpected DCN. Because of the abnormal timing of the DCN signal, the error is "COMREC received DCN". (I could be wrong, you know...)
